FISHING & ICE FISHING

WALLEYE, LAKE TROUT, SMALLMOUTH BASS, AND NORTHERN PIKE

Gunflint Lake borders Minnesota and Canada and is a large deep glacial lake. Our water is crystal clear with a clarity currently around 12 feet that has ranged from 8 to 18 feet over the past 40 years. For more information about Gunflint Lake, click here.

Fishing comes to life in the spring with the walleye and smallmouth bass both spawning. The fishing opener in May finds our crystal-clear lake colder than most of the mid or southern lakes. The northern pike are active in this cold water, and the lake trout are usually fairly shallow and average 3-4 pounds. Walleye fishing this time of year can be a little more challenging. They are usually more active at night. It is not impossible to catch a trophy over 10 pounds.

Summer and fall are great times to fish by boat or pontoon. There are no motor restrictions on Gunflint, Magnetic, Little Gunflint, Little North or North Lakes, though motors larger than a 25 horsepower may be difficult to maneuver beyond Gunflint and Magnetic because of water levels.

In the winter, ice fishing awaits, just a mere 100 yards from your Gunflint Pines cabin doorstep, Gunflint Lake offers some of the best lake trout ice fishing in the country. Neighboring lakes also offer walleye, splake, brook trout, and rainbow trout.

Gunflint Lake has no motor restrictions. Guests are welcome to bring their own boats or rent one of ours.

To fish on the Canadian side of our area lakes, including Gunflint Lake, you will need to obtain a Remote Area Border Crossing Permit (RABC) from Immigration Canada.  Minnesota fishing licenses are available here. Ontario  fishing licenses and Outdoors cards can be purchased online. See links below for details.

Guided fishing trips are available with local area guides any time of the year (including winter). Guides will take up to three people in a boat and usually fish from 8:00 a.m. to about 4:00 p.m.
